Paul Taylor from Hoghton, who attended Hutton Grammar School, and Ian Hilary from Prestwich, who attended Bury Grammar School are two young men who have benefited from the scheme. Paul undertook a four-year degree course at Loughborough University leading to a Masters degree in automotive engineering, while Ian studied for a four-year degree Masters degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Manchester, gaining First Class Honours. They both joined the company on a full time basis in 2006,
Now they’re both honing their skills as design engineers at Leyland Trucks where they are spending a period of six months in each of the four areas within the design department as part of a structured programme, leading ultimately to Chartered Engineer status.
“The scheme helped me in many ways, not least that it’s led to a really interesting and secure job with a leading company,” says Paul. “When you’re a student money can be tight and the bursary, along with my summer earnings, was a great help.
Ian added “When I was coming to the end of my course the fact that Leyland Trucks had promised me a job really took the pressure off in terms of what my future employment might be and I could focus on my finals. Now, with full support from Leyland Trucks, I’m working towards Chartered Engineer status, which is a very high calibre, internationally recognised qualification to hold.”
Sponsored Students 2007
The company has just recruited three new undergraduates to take part in the Leyland Trucks Sponsorship Scheme, which offers bright and ambitious would-be engineers the opportunity to work with a world leading company to carve a career in engineering and technology. During their four years at university the three students will receive an annual bursary for each year of their course, undertake a paid placement during each summer vacation at the Leyland headquarters and have a planned offer of a job on completion of their studies. On graduation, they will receive support and mentoring to achieve Chartered Engineer status.
Stuart Heys, Managing Director, welcomed the 2007 successful applicants to the company, where they spent the summer learning about the production of the award winning XF, CF and LF trucks.
Peter Daunton, destined for Oxford, William Sanderson and John Stones who are headed to Loughborough and Manchester respectively have all embarked on a Masters degree in Engineering. They join another 10 students who are already on the programme.
