What were you doing before you joined Leyland Trucks?
I used to work in a supermarket – I was in retail for 8 years and started as a checkout operator and worked my way through various roles with increasing responsibility until eventually I was a store manager. I then decided I needed a change and I returned to Leyland and started working for PACCAR Parts – I already knew how to drive a forklift truck so it was ideal for me at the time.

How have you progressed since you’ve been with Leyland Trucks?
After working here for 12 months, I saw an internal vacancy notice for a trainee Oracle developer within the IT department. I was interested in expanding my career and thought that this would be a good opportunity to do that. I applied for the role and was fortunate enough to be successful – I’ve now been in the department for 14 years and still enjoy it.

What’s the best thing about working at Leyland Trucks?
I like the fact that there is so much variety. Because the department is open to the whole business, I can be working for Finance on one day and Materials the next. As a manufacturing plant, there is also the opportunity to go out on to the shop floor and see the difference that the systems I have developed have made to the way people work. The positive results are a great motivator.

What’s a typical day for you?
There is no typical day! One week I can be on a project developing a new system involving robots spraying paint on to truck chassis and the next I could be auditing the sales order process. Sometimes I can be taking some customers around the factory showing them the build process and the key features of the plant and other times I can be working on a Six Sigma project to improve the efficiency of the Supplier Delivery Performance system.

What do you hope the future holds for you at Leyland Trucks?
More of the same – I enjoy what I do and hope that I can continue to develop and stay enthused by the variety of work that I’m asked to undertake.
