Sponsored Students and Graduates
Graduates have recently entered the business within various roles and have been employed within departments such as Engineering, Purchasing and Finance.
Undergraduates are typically sought to follow our successful “sponsored student” scheme whereby the company provides sponsorship to the student whilst they are at university, provides a summer placement for them (ideally within a related field), with the ultimate aim of the student securing a role with the company upon completion of their studies.
Leyland Trucks is committed to delivering apprenticeships which add value to both the individual and the company.
Apprenticeships provide an entry route into the business which allows you to combine both educational studies with practical hands-on experience, whilst earning a salary.
Apprentices follow a standard development framework which incorporates practical, evidence based knowledge with academic skills gained within an educational setting.
Types of apprenticeship which we offer
We continually review the types of advanced and higher apprenticeships which we offer to ensure that we are providing apprentices with the right learning experiences, and to ensure the needs of the business are constantly met.
Depending upon the type of apprenticeship and the area where the apprentice is due to work, the duration of an apprenticeship can be anywhere from 2 – 4 years in length.
Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you will gain a recognised qualification which you can then use to progress your education and career further within the business.

- Design Engineering
- Automotive Engineering – Fitting
- Automotive Engineering – Electrical diagnostics
- Maintenance – Mechanical and Electrical
Each of these apprenticeships follow a structured pathway around our business to ensure you gain the most out of the apprenticeship whilst preparing you for future roles within the company.
Value to the business
Apprenticeships are one of the key entry points into our business. They help to bring in and develop talent and drive career progression within the business. The company helps to ensure that new members of our business have the necessary skills upon completion to undertake a wide range of roles within departments such as Design Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and various Commercial areas.
Careers and opportunities post-apprenticeship
Ex-apprentices within the business have had the opportunity to progress their careers within Leyland Trucks and many now hold senior positions within our business such as Lead Engineer and Operations Director, whilst others have had the opportunity to travel and to share their knowledge and skills more widely within PACCAR, including providing assistance to the manufacturing facility in Brazil for 3 months.
Many ex-apprentices also choose to continue furthering their education after they have completed their apprenticeship. The company supports them both financially and with time to enable them to complete a wide range of courses from HNC through to Masters level.
How to apply
Typically, apprenticeship recruitment and selection takes place between January – April each year, with a planned start date of employment with the business of August each year.
