Inclusivity at the heart of Leyland Trucks
At Leyland Trucks, we are committed to creating a workplace that reflects the diversity of our community. Whether through supporting ex-forces personnel, championing accessibility, or driving internal change via our Diversity Council, inclusivity isn’t just a box to tick – it’s part of who we are.
Backing our armed forces
In 2024, we proudly signed the Armed Forces Covenant, joining more than 11,000 UK organisations in a pledge to support veterans, service leavers, and their families as they transition into civilian employment.
To put this commitment into action, we made a pledge ensuring that ex-military applicants who meet the job criteria automatically progress to the interview stage, removing barriers that often hinder talented veterans from advancing through standard recruitment processes.
We also actively support veterans and reservists within our workforce, through a Military network of ex-forces staff, Reservists and cadets who help to shape the support and assistance we offer. A specialist Reservist and Mobilisation policy ensures Reservists within our workforce are supported with their training obligations, and during time of mobilisation.
We’re already a Bronze award holder in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme and have our sights set on Silver and Gold, reinforcing our long-term commitment to ex-forces personnel. This aligns with the broader mission of our parent company, PACCAR, which actively supports veterans through its "Hiring Our Heroes" initiative in the US.
“Each and every day, we’re proud to demonstrate our steadfast commitment to inclusion and to honour Leyland Trucks’ long history of supporting our community and our country. We’re committed to challenging and dismantling barriers that keep those with atypical backgrounds out of employment and progression, and to provide meaningful pathways for talented individuals to enjoy a rewarding career in our industry. This approach doesn’t just align with our core values, but also ensures we attract a wide pool of talent, whose contributions drive our business forward for years to come.” James Jepson, HR Director, Leyland Trucks
A workplace for everyone
Also in 2024, we became a Disability Confident Employer, strengthening our promise to champion the skills, talents, and contributions of people of all abilities. Through this scheme, we are:
- Breaking down barriers to ensure fair opportunities for all
- Fostering greater awareness and challenging outdated perceptions of disability
- Implementing lasting change with the Disability Confident framework as our guide
We’re also rolling out new training for managers and leaders on inclusive recruitment and working closely with SEND schools to enhance our apprenticeship programmes, ensuring we create a pipeline of skilled, diverse talent for the future.
Driving a culture of inclusion
Our Diversity Council, an integral part of our PACCAR family, leads initiatives that drive change while ensuring accountability at every step.
In 2023, we deepened our commitment by joining the Lancashire Skills Pledge, a move that focuses on tackling barriers for individuals with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
At Leyland Trucks, we don’t just want to reflect our community – we want to empower it. By embedding inclusivity into our culture, we’re making our business stronger, our workplace fairer, and our future brighter.
“Diversity within our team – whether in skills, experience, or perspectives – brings vibrancy and innovation to our workplace. It’s not only the right thing to do; it’s smart business. For individuals who are neurodiverse, for those who have visible or invisible disabilities or are transitioning from a military to a civilian environment, it’s about making reasonable adjustments to help them thrive, not just during the recruitment process but throughout their careers at Leyland Trucks.”Maria Rogers, Learning & Development Manager, Leyland Trucks
