Applications opened in January and attracted more than 800 candidates. Following a rigorous selection process, 21 apprentices joined the business – marking another significant intake for one of the UK’s most respected apprenticeship programmes.

This year’s apprenticeships span seven specialist areas, with roles including Assembly Operatives, Automotive Engineers, Facility and Maintenance Engineers, Design Engineers and Supply chain. For the first time, Leyland Trucks has also welcomed a Control Systems Engineering apprentice and a Finance apprentice, broadening the programme’s reach to meet growing operational and industry demands.

To kick off their Leyland Trucks career journey, apprentices took part in practical sessions at the company’s Tooling Academy, joined team-building activities, and met their apprentice “buddies” – experienced colleagues who will support them throughout their programme.

The apprentices will complete academic training in partnership with Preston College, Blackpool & The Fylde College, UCLan, Training 2000, Leeds Trinity University and Runshaw College, with qualifications available up to and including degree level.

Lucy Cross, Design Engineering Apprentice, said: “Being from Leyland and seeing my brother start his apprenticeship here two years ago, I’ve always known Leyland Trucks is a company that supports its team and helps people grow.

“After completing my T-Level in Design Engineering, I wanted to continue learning while building a career. When I saw the opportunity to do both here, with a degree apprenticeship, I knew it was the right choice.

“The first few weeks have been fantastic. I’ve been meeting my team, getting to know other apprentices, and even visiting customers. It’s such a positive and supportive environment – I’m really looking forward to seeing what the next four years will bring.”

Maria Rogers, Learning and Development Manager at Leyland Trucks, added: “Each year our apprenticeship programme evolves to reflect our business growth and industry changes. With new degree-level opportunities and first-time roles in Control Systems Engineering and Finance, this year’s intake is particularly exciting.

“Our apprentices bring fresh perspectives that will play a vital role in accelerating our work on Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) development and sustainability commitments. For us, apprenticeships are about building the next generation of talent from the ground up – people who truly understand our values, processes and ambitions. We can’t wait to see what this new cohort will achieve.”
